Shri K. G. Balakrishanan -Balakrishanan, Konakuppakatil Gopinathan, B.Sc., L.L.B. L.L.M
Born on 12-05-1945 to a clerk who was serving in the Vaikom Munsiff Court.
He studded in Government High School for which he had to walk 5 kms every day. He did his B.Sc. from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam and completed his L.L.B. degree from the Government Law College, Ernakulam.
Enrolled as an Advocate of the Kerala Bar Council on 16-03-1968.
Practised on both on Civil and Criminal sides at Erinakulam.
He then completed his L. L. M. in 1971.
Appointed as a Munsif in the Kerala Judicial Sevice on 10-01-1973 and later resigned from service and resumed practice as an Advocate in the Kerala High Court.
On 26-09-1985 - appointed as a judge of the Kerala High Court.
On 24-11-1997-transferred to Gujarat High Court.
On 16-07-1998 became the Chief Justice of the High Court of Gujarat.
He also discharged duties of Governor of Gujarat.
Also served as Member of the General Council of the Gujarat National Law University.
On 09.09.1999 he was transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Madras and assumed charge there as Chief Justice.
On 08-06-2000 elevated as the Judge, Supreme Court.
He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of India in the forenoon of 14.01.2007 by then President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and has served one of the longest tenure as Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court and was the first judge from the state of Kerala to become Chief Justice of India.
12 May 2010 he was retired as Chief Justice of India.
He was appointed as the sixth Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission and served the full term till 11th May 2015
